In the beginning the ministry was designed to be called Hope Christian Ministries, however, Pastor Victor & Lydia Darteh wanted a name that still meant Hope but yet intriguing, so they searched out for other forms of Hope and came across a Greek word Elpis in the bible dictionary, Elpis Christian Ministries was birthed.

Elpis Christian Ministries is born out of a period of intense prayer. From this came the need to make God known in practical terms and for the message of the Gospel to become relevant to people, especially those who doubt the existence of God, those who society has given up on and those who don’t feel the need to serve God. Out of this came the vision that Elpis is built on which is;

Malachi 1:11
For from the rising of the sun, even to it’s going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations, Says the Lord of hosts.” This scripture has become the foundation of Elpis Christian Ministries. We derive prayer from this scripture as a means to generate and bring revival, awareness, and tangibility of God to people.

Elpis Christian Ministries first service was held on 13th January 1998 in the living room of Pastor Victor & Lydia Darteh, with a mantlepiece as a pulpit. From this meeting, a date to formally go out was agreed and the first official meeting took place in Beaumont Community Centre, Leyton on the 10th May 1998. From there the church grew to about 60 people.

In 2004 Elpis Christian Ministries relocated to Wellington Road, E17. Where they acquired an 8000 square ft property, from here the church grew to about 150 people. Fast forwarding to July 2009, God took not only the Pastors but the church through a period of rebranding, where devout members left and the church congregation fell to 16.

From 2009 to 2014 the church went through a period Elpis Christian Ministries calls ‘The Wilderness Period’ where a lot of pruning, growing, maturing happened, through this the church gained great stability.

From 2014 to present Elpis Christian Ministries has stabilized, with a regular attendance of 150 and celebrated our 21st anniversary on May 10th, 2019, this is just a sneak peek into the history of Elpis Christian Ministries.

We invite you to join us as we continue on this journey.
